After loads of public exposure Molly and I gave our first
demonstration for the Houston SW
MS Support Group lead by Nathan
Wolkovitz. Molly demonstrated how she can push/pull
a wheelchair, get a drink from the ice chest, put trash in
a can, carry items with her mouth, pick up items, retrieve
the phone and remote.
After the presentation the whole class met for lunch. Nathan
and I formed a bond that has grown into a great friendship,
and working relationship. He is a Representative for
My Service Dog, Inc.
At the same presentation I met Bill
Klotz and he announced that he wanted a Service Dog
and had been in the market for one for years. I agreed to
help him and started looking for a Foster Parent and
a puppy/dog.
Bill and I traveled by Metro Lift to the SPCA in Houston
and found the first dog, Bear. I worked with him for a month
and decided that he was perfect in every way but one. He would
not retrieve. I sold Bear to a lady I met in the park named
Sandra who later decided to sit on MSD, Inc's Board
of Directors. Bear found a happy, loving home and I started
looking for another puppy.
In the mean time... Molly and I gave a demonstration to the
Katy MS Support Group led by Joe Fortner and his
wife Sherry. Joe announced that he wanted to be a Foster
Parent for Bill's next dog. Things were coming together.
One day I happened upon a phone number of a lady that use
to train Service Dogs named Johanna Redmen. Her husband,
who also had MS, passed away before I could meet him. When
I called Johanna she said that she just happened to have a
litter of Golden Retriever puppies. After testing several
of them, Sharon (Secretary on MSD's Board of Directors), Jake
(Her three year old son), and I chose a little boy and he
was named Ranger.
